I love this. I thought you might, too.
I read this once upon a time on the pages of a blog I’ve enjoyed for quite some time. There are countless reasons why I enjoy reading the Traveling Mermaid but sometimes I’ll go back just so I can read these words.
Words carry such power. The words I share from the Traveling Mermaid are borrowed from Don Miguel Ruiz in “The Four Agreements: A Practical Guide to Personal Freedom” (2001).
I hope they inspire you as much as they inspire me.
Here you go:
Be impeccable with your word.
Speak with integrity. Say only what you mean. Avoid using the word to speak against yourself or to gossip about others. Use the power of your word in the direction of truth and love.

Don’t take anything personally.
Nothing others do is because of you. What others say and do is a projection of their own reality. When you are immune to the opinions and actions of others, you won’t be the victim of needless suffering.

Don’t make assumptions.
Find the courage to ask questions and to express what you really want. Communicate with others as clearly as you can to avoid misunderstandings, sadness and drama. With just this one agreement, you can completely transform your life.

Always do your best.
Your best is going to change from moment to moment; it will be different when you are healthy as opposed to sick. Under any circumstances, simply do your best and you will avoid self-judgment, self-abuse and regret.

Thank you for your sweet words. I love it when I discover a reader I didn’t know I had – one of the great things about the internet. I’m glad you’re passing along the Four Agreements – they are words I go to again and again.

Juliana,
I feel the same way. Everytime I come back to them for a refresher course (which is often), they have the same impact.
